Renovation
The University of Chicago’s Laboratory Schools, located on the Hyde Park Campus, is a highly regarded private institution that has experienced significant growth over its 100-year history. In order to cater to its growing student body, a plan was designed to renovate and modernize its historic buildings, allowing the schools to expand enrollment from 1,750 to 2,050 students.
The multi-phase project involved new construction alongside plans to renovate existing structures. New construction included an early childhood education unit and enhanced space for performing and visual arts, while renovations were undertaken to provide restructured library spaces, improved faculty and administrative offices, areas for collaborative teaching and counseling, and enhanced life/safety systems, accessibility, sustainability, and infrastructure. Ortiz Contracting was brought on board to install new HVAC hot/cold water, steam, and compressed air piping systems, and to renovate existing HVAC ductwork and piping.
